RECORDING NEWS FROM DIVINE ART RECORDS/BRANDON MUSIC

Brandon, VT -

The winter releases from the international Divine Art group, part of Brandon Music (Brandon, VT), include their own pick of ‘disc of the year',  which features music by British and American composers.

“Madrigali: Fire and Roses” is a disc of music for small choir, based around original madrigals from the 16 th century; it also has two short pieces from the 20th century by James Macmillan and Gustav Holst,  but the major works are the suites ‘Madrigali' (six songs by San Fransisco-based composer Morten Lauridsen) and ‘Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal' by Paul Mealor.   The first section of this suite is based on Tennyson's poem and was revised by the composer, at the specific request of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge , to be included in the British royal wedding service (where it was re-set to the words ‘Ubi Caritas').  The royal couple had heard the live world premiere of the work in Aberdeen, Scotland by Paul Mealor's own Con Anima choir, the same singers who appear on this CD. Fabulously beautiful  music.

There is, in the north of England,  a strong school of composers writing lyrical and tuneful music  which is both modern  and traditional. Such a composer is David Dubery. His new CD of songs and chamber music is finding great admiration in Europe and will be released next month in the US. Featuring mezzo-soprano Adrienne Murray, and a host of top instrumentalists including the world renowned guitarist Craig Ogden,  this disc is on the Metier label ( msv 28523).

Thirdly, a name well known to most music fans all over the world – Peter Katin.  He flew to fame in the early 50s as a leading interpreter of the great 19 th century masterpieces and is still very active well into his 80s. This disc is actually a re-issue of a wonderful recording made in 1990,  featuring piano music by Brahms:  the ‘Handel Variations and Fugue'  and the sets of Intermezzi, Rhapsodies and Fantasias.  At mid price, a bargain on the Diversions label ( ddv 24157).

Brandon Music is  delighted to announce the signing of a contract to issue a 2CD set of the music of British composer Ed Hughes, performed by the New Music Players . T he company's  British branch is also busy with new signings and projects and has a busy schedule for 2012, while the Vermont headquarters is also working on a program of new jazz CDs and planning its proposed new Community Music and Arts Centre to be established in Brandon.
