BRUNSWICK (USA and UK)
Originally introduced by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company as a vertical cut disc pre-1920, the US label became part of American Record Corporation (ARC) and a sister to Columbia, and issued all kinds of music; it was sold off through a series of deals via Warners to Decca(US) - full history to come soon.. In Britain, US masters were first licensed to Chappells and released on Brunswick-Cliftophone; then British Brunswick Ltd issued discs under original US numbers on Brunswick; after the company was bought by Duphone then folded, Warner-Brunswick took over the UK side then licensed the name toBritish Decca who maintained the Brunswick label well into the pop era, where it was famed for early 'Northern Soul' . However after the American Brunswick label became part of ARC the British version was no longer linked to it - from then on it became the chief UK outlet for American Decca.
